Cuppa

A poem for winter.

Now stir the fire and close the shutter fast,
Let fall the curtains, wheel the sofa round,
And while the bubbling and loud-hissing urn
Throws up a steamy column, and the cups
That cheer but not inebriate wait on each,
So let us welcome peaceful evening in.

~William Cowper

Just because

Because... there is sun in the sky today.

Because... my kids are growing.

Because...I am incredibly skatter-brained and can't seem to form two coherent thoughts.

Because...I miss the trampoline.

Because...this picture was taken on April 11 2008 and it was 85 degrees that day.

Just, because...

Katie goes Indie

I am falling more and more in love with Indie music. Daily. Some songs are just the pick-me-up this Nor' Westerner needs to chase away the gray. They make me feel "like I could walk a hundred miles" through all this rain and mud.

Also, I am thinking I might want to be a Lobster Man's wife. Just sayin'.

Sit and spin

Still trying to iron out the wrinkles in the very outdated and dusty computer/interweb business.  Whodathunk that every program we own would have to be updated, upgraded and dug out from under piles of junk. Not me I guess. I assumed (ahem, we all know what that means) that my darling spouse would simply plug the computer in to the modem and interweb as we knew it would be up and running, lickety-split. As will all things technical, well all things in general, nothing is ever easy here in Calamity-ville.

Whodathunkit?

Obviously not I.  I am like a spoiled child.  I want my candy. NOW.  I want to sit at my desk and open my  picture files, effortlessly of course, and upload photo after lovely photo to my wonderful little blog.  But no!  I sit down and immediately my computer sticks out her tongue and says "neener-neener you can't play here". Then Ms. Compy  proceeds to blow a big fat raspberry right in my face. How could she? I mean seriously!  She simply doesn't understand that I have dreamed of the day I would have the interweb again. What does she expect me to do while she does her house keeping?  I have blog posts galore waiting to be published.  I have recipes, stories and photos to share. All this will have to wait till all the cobwebs are swept away and Ms. Compy has her house in order again.

Meanwhile, I am trying not sit and spin my wheels: aka trying not to stomp my feet and throw a fit like the big fat baby I am. So, I am planning the garden for this year. I am trying very hard  not to be tempted by the adorable baby chicks at the feed store. {I barely made it out sans chicks yesterday.} I am catching up on the laundry pile up. I am spending far too much time dreaming of moving to the "real" country; thanks in no small part to The Pioneer Woman.  After the big wind/rain storm we had on Sunday, I am reevaluating my emergency supply stash and finding it seriously lacking. Wishing I could be stitching up a batch of these little beauties.

Well, 'the days a wasting' as Grandma would have said. Have a productive week.

Just a minute for a garden tidbit

In between the torrential down-pours of the last few weeks I have been sneaking out of doors to snip this, plant that and just plain flit hither and yon.  In between the down-pours I have almost gone mad from lack of gardening in its more serious form; ie: hard core garden planting.  All of the soggy soil has about made me resort to container gardening over traditional in-ground gardening...but alas for the last three days the sun has shone!

After months and months of what my sister farm chicks and I have lovingly dubbed "bi-polar" weather, the seeds are going into the soil!  While Miriam and Cara are starting their Three Sisters Garden plots, I have been  pulling spindly plants from the greenhouse.

Today however, I had to take a minute for myself.  Today I escorted my kids plus three extras to the library for a moment of blogging.  I do have a smidge of guilt at not being out in the garden but..

So while I am here I want to know...How does your garden grow??

Rested

After a nice, semi relaxing day, I am back to the grind-stone.

I am working on a corn husk doll tutorial for the long neglected Sanity Savers site, a new triptych for this site and currently trying out the 'blogger in draft' -which I like so far.

I am finally settling into a good groove with our homeschool.  Four years later.  Seems odd to me that it would take so long..  Whatever, things are really going well as far as schooling goes.

It is rainy and cold here this morning and I have secret hopes of pulling out the sewing machine and sneaking in a few hours of stitching.  I have been inspired by Erin's scrappy log cabin blocks. Check out the absolute adorableness of them here and here.

Hi-ho, hi-ho, its off to work I go...

Lazy daze

This past week has flown by in a blur of heat waves and hours spent in the backyard pool. This morning dawned cooler promising a break in the hundred degree weather.

As I did my morning rounds about the garden I had to snap a shot of my favourite butter yellow Nasturtium. My sweet friend Miriam is green with envy over this little gem. I will be sure to gift her a packet of seeds next spring.

I have all sorts of gardening/life news to share but right now I just need to sit in the shade and sip some Sun Tea. And enjoy the buttery goodness of that cute little Nasturtium.

The tryst continues...

From deep within the grey tunnel of sideways-driving-rain that is life in the Maritime Northwest...Katie sends you a tiny bit of pink tinted (albeit, slightly drippy) sunshine.

(Insert imaginary photo of lovely water droplet covered pink Camellia here)

Or she would... if there were not a continuing tryst...

Katie is about ready to do something drastic. Like, commit blogicide.

Or buy a new computer.

Blehck and White

Well, things are back to normal. I took that first photo yesterday. All signs of snow have melted away into a mucky muddy mess.

Blehck!

Snow Glorious Snow!!

I know. I know....

All you folks who actually get snow are saying: ' Come on lady! Enough with the snow already!'

Please, just bear with me while I wallow in the snowy goodness of my little corner of the world. It will all melt away soon enough. All of the snow gear will be tucked neatly back into boxes. The rains will come again. Hubby will work normal hours. The consumption of hot cocoa will decline.

Till then dear ones...

Let me wallow.

What is that??

Besides being butt-crack-cold here, it is amazingly bright and beautiful. The days dawn has brought us a gorgeous blue sky. This is such a shocking occurrence that my kids actually asked "What is that?" when the light poured through the living room windows.

What are they saying?

Really folks, living in the dark Northwest is starting to take its toll.

Let's talk about snow...

Is it snowing outside yet?

This has been the non-stop plea echoing from all four of my little rascals. (read:NON-STOP) Ever since they got wind of the coming snow storm, my children have been blazing maniacs. Like Bart Simpson and his annoying "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? ARE-WE-THERE-YET???" my kids have taken to chanting the snow mantra: Is it snowing yet? Is it? Huh? HUH? Huh? Is it snowing outside YET?!

Silly kids.

Well this morning my kids awoke to a winter wonderland of snow. Can you imagine the freak out? Probably not.

It was 5:30 am when they woke and it was barely 7 am when this picture was taken.

After fighting over gloves and wool socks for nearly 2 hours I could stand it no more. I sent them out to play in the early morning snow. You know what? It was colder than the dickens out there but they had a blast.

The forecast for the next two weeks is guess what?? More snow and ICE! This is so rare for us here in the Pac Northwest. I just told the kids of the weather forecast and you know, they all started dancing and jumping around singing "We were dreaming of a white Christmas..... and now WE get ONE!!"

Silly kids indeed.

Farmishness

Well I totally made that word up. Farmishness. Do you like it? I think it suits our feeble attempt at farming.

So, it's been snowing here all day but nothing has stuck yet. We have little whitish puddles all around the house but nary a tuft of fluffy powder. The weather guessers are saying that the big storm is coming tonight. The kids can hardly contain their excitement at the impending snow storm.

In other news.

Thursday night we (as in hubby, eldest and myself) tried our hand at chicken butchering. This was the first time for all of us. It went much quicker than I had anticipated and smelled terrible. Right now hubby and eldest are out in the freezing rain doing round two. We did two the first night and are doing two again today. That leaves us with 13 more. All I can say is, them birds better taste freakin' fabulous!

The wood box is full. The chicken is roasting in the oven. The tea kettle is whistling merrily. The snow/rain/slush is drifting slowly past the windows. It is just another day of farmishness here at the Little Farm in the Wildwood.

Small joys

While I was out and about this morning, reading up on everyone's blogs, I found this little gem: Reasons to Love Winter.

After perusing the lovely photo's for a bit, I tried hard to think up my own reason to love winter. As I live in non-winter country (mostly just rain, rain, rain), I had to think hard but I came up with one.

Hot Cocoa with mini Marshmallows.

We may not get snow but at least it's cold enough for Cocoa.

Have a 'Reason to Love Winter'? Please share.

Goodbye Summer!

Rain

It has been raining off & on and nasty for days n' days. Before the rain we had 100 degree weather and before that we had snow and before the snow we had 90 degree weather. What gives??

How is a farm girl supposed to get anything done with such wacky weather? I should do some more spring cleaning but that wouldn't be any fun. I should see if I can find the box that has all of the gardening books and my old garden journal. Most of our books, other than those pertaining to homeschooling, are still in boxes in the attic. This will prove to be a daunting task. I kid you not when I say, there are probably 50 boxes of books up there. Ohhhhh, and the spiders and various other creepy crawlies. Maybe I'll wait for the weekend and ask the Inspector General to help with that. Wow, way to talk my self out of that one. :)

This rain has really got me in a funky mood. I really need to be outside working the garden or planting something. All of my pots of 'things' that I brought with me when we moved back here last fall are starting to take root. The other day, I went to grab a large pot of creeping thyme and the thing was rooted solid to the ground!

New garden tip: Don't let plants set in pots on top of dirt for 8 months before planting them out.

Yesterday, between storms, I took a walk around to see what was blooming. So many things I have never noticed before. I am not sure if I just wasn't paying attention (that ones for you Farm Suite) or if things needed a few years to regenerate after being neglected for so many years. (READ: The woman we bought our house from had M.S. and had been unable to care for the gardens for years, to say things were bad would be an understatement. Things were so badly overgrown with blackberries that the true beauty of the place was hidden.) Anywho, I just found that we have a huge (hence my surprise, because it really is dang big) White Dogwood. It has never bloomed before this year and it only set 3 flowers. We have 2 trees that I was sure were peaches (from the leaf shape and size) but now I have no idea what they are, as they have done nothing but grow leaves. I dreamed and plotted my new rose garden. I made plans for the sunflower gardens for the girls. I discovered the perfect place for a reading bench. I made note of the best place for a secret garden.

As I walked about, I was surprised by the smell. The wind had died down and all was extremely still, truly the calm before the storm. The scents from the plants seemed to settle around me. I could smell everything: the chives, the roses, mint, rosemary and the sweet, heady scent of an unknown vining plant. It was almost dreamy, the air electric and sweet. The sky dark grey as the storm moved over the mountains from the coast. Amazing.

It is raining again now. Puddles lay on the ground everywhere. The garden is too wet to work. The children have long since grown tired of the joys of mud. The chickens are wet and grouchy; they protest the rain by not laying eggs. I am grouchy. I want the sun to shine, so that I might return to my beloved garden.

I press my face to the dining room window, singing softly like a child:

Rain.......Rain.........Go away. Come again some other day!

Say What???!!!!

Inspector General insisted it was snowing and all I could say was "whatever!" Then to my surprise, it really was. Great big fluffy snowflakes were floating loftily down the mountainside. It was the most beautiful thing to wake up to.

As I was so freaked out about the snow, I thought: Take some pictures!! So I did....

I was so lucky to get this one picture up for all ( three) of you readers. HAHA! Internet is finicky when it snows.

Have a fabulous Saturday!!
